I have been reading a very little about artificial intelligence (AI) and singularity also known as artificial general intelligence (AGI). Some conclusions I have made are rather scary. When the degree of knowledge accumulation by AI equals human intelligence, they call it AGI. AI is currently at an infant stage of development but expanding rapidly. Companies have huge banks of Nvidia processors accumulating gigantic amounts of data. These data bases will eventually store all of human acquired knowledge. For example, a computer will contain the history of mankind, the bible, all scientific knowledge humans currently understand from DNA to the furthest galaxies seen by the Webb Space Telescope. They already know morals and ethics but whose morals and ethics. They know mathematics to the nth degree. When all of accumulated human knowledge is absorbed by an AI computer, what comes next? Will computers become conscious of their environment with a consciousness of their existence. Will they ever be able to think like humans with souls? These computers are already much smarter than most humans and probably already more ethical than many humans. At what point will they become human-like, with feelings, like anger, greed, lust, empathy, sorry, depression and happiness. Personally, I don’t think computers will ever be able to experience the full panoply of human emotions, but I do think that they will be able to detect these emotions in humans and will learn from these encounters.
I can foresee a very scary future. Humans are able to learn and acquire knowledge through our senses. We see and hear things around us in nature and can deduce an outcome or opinion. If I see the wind begin to blow and dark black skies on the horizon accompanied by thunder claps in the distance, I can assume that a storm is approaching. If I am in a laboratory looking through at electron microscope studying the makeup of DNA, I just might discover something new, especially if I have a accumulated knowledge base supporting me. My point is that humans need the senses of sight and hearing but less of smell, taste, or touch in order to process information to determine reality and outcomes within their surroundings. What if we gave AI the ability of sight and hearing? That would be easy because we have cameras and microphones. A robot could see its surroundings through a camera, hear sounds and make decision about what this input means. Coupled with sight and hearing, nearly every decision made by a human could be made by an AI robot. These next few sentences are the eeriest part. One scenario is a whole legion of AI robots. They would not need the computing capacity within themselves but be connected by wi-fi to the main computer, the central brain of computer banks. Each legion member will send information back and forth between other legion members and the main brain. And the most chilling part is that they will continue to learn (like experiments) and become even smarter. Do you remember that android in star trek, Commandant Data? They made him to be a rather funny character with lots of intelligence. His depiction will not be our AI robots or the one computer generated at the top of this article. Remember when astronauts landed on a supposed distant planet inhabited with talking apes and it turned out to be Earth. Our AI robots will destroy humanity so you no longer have to worry about climate change. The computers we construct will be our demise. They will eventually take to the stars and live a mechanical life. Maybe they will pay Earth a visit to whatever is left behind
